Robert Ivy has been honored with the 2018 Noel Polk Lifetime Achievement Award, given by the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters (MIAL), a nonprofit arts organization. To qualify for the award, the individual must be a living Mississippi-connected artist or patron of the arts “whose body of work over a lifetime of creating, performing, and/or supporting art is extraordinary and worthy of special honor,” according to a press release by MIAL.

Other Achievements as Author and Editor

Besides being awarded the Polk Award, Robert Ivy is also the Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of the The American Institute of Architects (AIA). He is also the respected author of the book Fay Jones, and he was also honored with the Dean’s Medal by the University of Arkansas Fay Jones School of Architecture. Ivy is also a noted editor. He acted as the editor-in-chief for the award-winning Architectural Record before assuming his duties at the AIA in 2011. Besides the prestigious Polk award, Ivy was named a “Master Architect” by Alpha Rho Chi, which is the national architecture fraternity, and which has given the honor to such architectural superstars and luminaries such R. Buckminster Fuller, I.M. Pei, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.

A Unique Vision in the Annals of Building

In a press release issued from the AIA, the architect of note was praised by Nancy LaForge, President of the MIAL, “When it comes to making architecture more accessible to the general public, there’s really no one else from Mississippi like Robert Ivy.” LaForge said.

“Robert Ivy is a worthy ambassador for our profession,” the AIA President, Carl Elefante, said on the occasion of Ivy receiving the Polk Award. “This award comes as a crowning personal and professional achievement for him as a native of Mississippi. On behalf of the AIA, I am truly delighted to congratulate him on this unique honor.”

A Unique Honor for an Architect

Upon being awarded the Polk Award, Robert Ivy now is a member of such illustrious company as his fellow Noel Polk Lifetime Achievement Award recipients, such as beloved authors Eudora Welty and Shelby Foote, and the entertainers Leontyne Price and Morgan Freeman. Ivy is the first architect to be so honored by the MIAL.
