The American Institute of Architects (AIA) was founded in 1857 to promote the architectural profession by setting standards by which the professionals were to abide. It has undergone several changes over the years, and today, it has more than 90,000 members, most of whom are architects while the rest are associated professionals. The headquarters of the AIA are in Washington, DC and it has more than 260 chapters in various countries.
The AIA has been instrumental to the development of the architectural profession in the U.S. and beyond. Before the AIA, there were no set standards that architects were required to follow, and this meant anyone could pass as an architect. The AIA helps architects in many ways including sponsoring their education, conducting research on the market and trends in the industry that helps both practicing and emerging architects, and providing architects with resources to help them improve their skills.
